STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT: MIND TRAPS

Pink + Black Ink. White Shirt. 3-D Shapes.

The “Mind Traps” design brings together, color and concept for an Undiagnosed signature tee. This design takes on geometric and 3-dimensionall depth. The sharp, definitive shapes in this design create rigid structure. This structure is meant to symbolize “Mind Traps”, the confining labels that exist in our society. The utilization of lines over labels stand for this stereotypical image of prison confinement. Undiagnosed is making the statement about how trapping these labels can be. We encourage breaking the box and lifting the labels that keep individuals trapped.

Each color trapped within its own box, each shape falling behind the bars of another all play into the picture Jane Crager creates with this design.

“Mind Traps” is a Jane Crager design. Jane is co-founder and designer at Undiagnosed. The design process at Undiagnosed is unconventional and differs from shirt to shirt. For the “Mind Traps” design, the combination of shape and color are the focal points that convey the message of the shirt. In the development process with the “Mind Traps” design, Jane experimented with different texts on the 3-dimensional shape. One iteration of the shirt included the phrase, “I want to hide so that no one can see all that’s wrong with me”. Jane, as both a poet and designer is able to play around with the messaging of the Undiagnosed shirts. The deliberate choice to print “Mind Traps” was to have comprehensible, representative text align with the intricate shape. The shape is patterned with distinct panels that include the bold colors of the Undiagnosed brand. The color and shape division align with the representation the design aspires to capture. Each color trapped within its own box, each shape falling behind the bars of another all play into the picture Jane Crager creates with this design.

The “Mind Traps” graphic tee is a fan favorite on college campuses. The Undiagnosed team has popped up at Georgetown University, Villanova University, Fairfield University, Washington University, and many more, no matter the campus, an attraction to the “Mind Traps” tee is apparent. This tee relates to the college student customer directly. All the labels of grades, popularity, jobs, clubs, appearance, athletics, and MORE weigh on students minds. Wearing this tee sheds a little light on what traps them while they stroll through campus taking them head on!
